Auld Reekie or Dear Green Place?

Just back from a wonderful few days in Edinburgh and Glasgow. I don’t think I’ve ever had the opportunity of comparing the two cities before, at least not from immediate first hand experience. And the thing I’ve learned is that there is no comparison. It would be like making a judgement between Taggart and Rebus. See what I mean? Impossible! Only 40 miles may separate the two cities, but they’re worlds apart in everything that makes them what they are. …

Dracula Was Here!

Whitby, on the North Yorkshire coast – home to Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the fishermen’s Gansey, black Jet, Captain Cook, and annual Goth weekends. It is also a delightfully friendly and picturesque fishing port. We were lucky enough to enjoy a visit this week. Here are a few of the things we saw. The Whitby Fish Market where little boats were arriving every few minutes to offload their shellfish catches. A chocolate shop. I made the picture big because it’s… well…a …

Reaching for the Sky

I’ve heard tell that if you admit to a phobia, facing your fears will help to cure them. Well it didn’t work for spiders, or noisy crowded spaces, and it certainly hasn’t helped me cope with my vertigo, which is why the sight of these two guys at the top of that chimney in York made me feel queasy. I’m not quite sure what they’re doing up there, or why they’ve got a ladder, or even what they are going …

A Day in Lincoln

I’m well on my way to finishing my current WIP, which is a Christmas story in the Loveday Ross Cornish Mysteries’ series. By way of a little reward, hubby and I treated ourselves to a day out in the beautiful City of Lincoln. These are few of the things we enjoyed on the way. This is the magnificent Lincoln Cathedral, which for more than 200 years (1311-1549) was the tallest building in the world. Its dramatic gothic architecture still dominates …

Life Aboard a Royal Yacht

If you have ever wondered what The Queen’s bedroom looked like, then wonder no more. For here it is in all its glory – and it’s titchy. But then it’s not exactly a bedroom, more a luxurious cabin on board the Royal Yacht Britannia. I’ve been meaning to post these pictures for some time. I took them on a recent visit to the yacht, which is now a tourist attraction, berthed at Ocean Terminal, Leith, just outside Edinburgh. It is …

Persecuted or Protected?

Rena George Days Out 6 Comments

A very sad thing is happening in the Scottish Highlands, in a part of the world I know so well – Ross-shire. Someone is killing beautiful red kites (like the one opposite) and buzzards. In the last few weeks, 14 dead kites and 5 buzzards have been found. Indiscriminate, mindless killings!! It beggars belief that anyone could be so cruel. A reward set up by the RSPB and added to by horrified members of the public, has now reached £10,000. …

How to Brighten a Dreich January Day

Rena George Days Out, Other Stuff 8 Comments

January is my least favourite month. I read somewhere that at this time of year we only get about a minute of light each day. So when I’m offered the chance to down tools in favour of a day out in the country…well, I’m not likely to refuse, am I?  It didn’t matter that the purpose of the trip was for my husband to try out his new Christmas Sat Nav toy.  I didn’t mind the black sky, or the …
