Six of the Best!

If you’re a fan of crime fiction, short stories and great, exciting new authors, then you are in for a treat here.

I’m delighted to introduce you to the finalists in the Bloody Scotland Short Story Competition.

Six brilliant tales, each of them different, each of them excellent. They have been chosen from more than a hundred entries and you can read them all on the link above.

Voting closes on August 21, so there’s still plenty of time for you to settle down, have a good read and support your chosen author.

My personal choice was Still Life, by Margaret Kirk. It’s an edgy, atmospheric, twist in the tail mystery set in Orkney. I loved it.

The winners will be announced at the fourth Bloody Scotland crime fiction festival, which takes place in Stirling from September 11- 13.

If you fancy going along, the festival features writing masterclasses and Q&A sessions with top names in crime fiction such as Val McDermid, Ian Rankin, Ann Cleeves, Peter May, Martina Cole, Denise Mina, and Hollywood screenwriter turned novelist, Alexandra Sokoloff.

Alexandra has an innovative and entertaining way to help writers structure their screenplay/book.

Basically it involves playing a film you’ve previously recorded, and stopping it at different stages to pinpoint where the various action scenes – revelations – twists – set pieces – take place. Here’s the link. It’s well worth checking out.
