We’ve been celebrating Mother’s Day in the UK since the 1600s. It’s rather comforting to know that we have spines-blood-seriesbeen publically loving and cherishing the special person who is Mum for as long as this.

Here we traditionally treat our mothers with gifts of flowers, boxes of chocs, maybe breakfast in bed, or Sunday lunch in a nice restaurant.

Other counties have different ideas about the tradition.

In Spain the celebration happens on December 8, where Mother’s Day is a religious event.

In South Africa, Mother’s Day is taken as an opportunity to honour not just mothers, but grandmothers.

Families in New Zealand celebrate Mother’s Day with picnics on the beach.

In Australia a coloured carnation signifies that a person’s mother is living, while a white carnation is used to honour a deceased mum.

Mother’s Day in the US is a signal for big time celebrations. It’s a national holiday, and up there in importance with Christmas Day and Valentines Day.

Mums in France are traditionally given a cake made to look like a bunch of flowers.

spines-blood-seriesMy gift to mothers everywhere (and even those who are not mothers) is an invitation to indulge in some feel good romance.
