This is a ‘list’ post. You may have noticed I love my lists.
There’s my ‘to do’ list, which I jot down daily and systematically work through. Everything doesn’t always get done, and the things that don’t are simply put on the next day’s list.
There’s my characters’ list – one that’s always on the go, and constantly being added to when I’m writing.
And then there is the list of things I need to research, and the list of changes, deletions or additions that must be made in the second draft of the WIP.
There’s my shopping list, my meals’ list, my reading list, my list of family and friends’ birthdays…and on it goes.

“If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail!” that’s what Benjamin Franklin said – and he was right.
Being a bit of a tidy nut, I can’t work in a mess. So here’s an insight into the domestic routine that keeps me sane.
My Eight Top Tips to Stay Organised.
1 Empty the dishwasher at night. The simplest and to my mind easiest thing you can to to stay organized. An empty dishwasher in the morning means you never have a sink piled with dirty breakfast dishes to deal with when you get home from work.
2 Make beds, which these days just involves plumping up pillows and throwing the duvet over. Takes seconds, and makes you feel good.
3. Clean bathroom after use – a quick wipe over of toilet bowl, washbasin and taps after use takes seconds. I keep wipes in bathroom for this. But I always dispose of them in the wastebasket. I never flush them away. It contaminates the sea.
4. Put dirty laundry in the laundry basket. Don’t even think of dropping it on floor or draping it over chairs. Easier if you keep a basket in every bedroom.
5 Get all family to do same! Why should you do all the work? Make sure they all do their bit!
6. Clean and tidy kitchen after breakfast. A quick whizz round wiping over surfaces and putting bread, cereal boxes, butter, marmalade etc back where they live. Dirty dishes can go directly into that lovely EMPTY dishwasher. Yes!
7. Have a place for everything and ALWAYS put things back where they belong. Make it a routine. Get into the habit. It’s the one way to stop clutter at its source. No more messy cluttered home!
8. Never let junk mail leave the hall. Have a recycling bin near the front door so the stuff can go directly in there and never reach the kitchen worktops or the coffee table in the lounge.
When the domestic routine runs smoothly (and seeing to the above tasks on a daily basis really doesn’t take much effort) it clears the mind for other things, which in my case is writing.
On the other hand, if you happen to be one of those lucky individuals who can work in chaos without a black cloud of guilt looming over your day, then you won’t need any of the above tips.
