It’s official. Chocolate is good for you!
And in the run up to Christmas when the supermarket shelves are glistening with festive tins, boxes, bars and bags of the lovely stuff, you might also want to know that eating chocolate could also stop you getting fat.
I know! How good is that?
According to scientists from a Columbian university medical centre, tests on laboratory mice revealed that one particular type of antioxidant in cocoa prevented them from gaining excess weight and lowered their blood sugar levels. Their findings indicate that eating lots of lovely dark chocolate may also help prevent obesity, as well as type-2 diabetes.
If we are to believe other past claims:
* Chocolate doesn’t give you spots.
* It could protect from heart attacks
* Fights PMS
* Good for the bones
* And can get you in the mood for…well you get the picture!
Another more recent study by the same US university scientists, claims particular ingredients in chocolate could help reverse age related memory decline in healthy older people.
Their study revealed that after three months on a high cocoa flavanol diet, (that’s the good bits from the cocoa bean) typical 60-year-olds who took part in the study had the memory of 30 or 40-year-olds.
Ok, so the scientists say they will still need to make bigger studies before they can be definite about the results, but it’s working for me.
Now, where did I put that bag of Thornton’s fruit creams?
Before I go, can I just say a huge thank you to everyone who supported the publication of my new Cornish mystery novel, A Cornish Obsession. (it’s still only 77p to download from Amazon) I am over the moon with the early sales results. The last time I checked the rankings, it was 4,058 in the main Kindle store, and in the top 100 in all three of its categories. I’m hoping that first review will come along some time soon.

Ah, thank you. I’m really excited about how well the book’s doing. Enjoy those Celebrations, Teresa, you deserve a treat. xx
As I mentioned on twitter, I’ve long known of the positive effects of chocolate, even winning an article competition when I submitted one about the dark stuff – and I convinced myself it was all true! So I’m very pleased to hear that science is still agreeing with the benefits – I’d rather have chocolate than cake any day!
That’s great news about your book, Rena – although I have it on kindle, it might be a while before I get sitting down to reading it. All the best with further sales.
