January is my least favourite month. I read somewhere that at this time of year we only get about a minute of light each day. So when I’m offered the chance to down tools in favour of a day out in the country…well, I’m not likely to refuse, am I?
It didn’t matter that the purpose of the trip was for my husband to try out his new Christmas Sat Nav toy.
I didn’t mind the black sky, or the rain, or the alarmingly deep puddles that stretched across the rural roads.
The trees were bending to the gale-like wind, the hedgerows were dripping wet, even the blackbirds looked pitifully bedraggled.
…And then we found this –
– the most gorgeous little thatched country pub you could imagine. Wood smoke curled from the chimney and there was a light at the window, so we went in.
…And then we found this –
Tartan cushions bedecked the old oak settles, brass miners’ lamps hung from ancient beams, and I was definitely coveting that huge
Parliament clock on the far wall. The place was achingly pretty.
We sat beside this crackling fire, and over the course of the next hour enjoyed a hearty Ploughman’s lunch, followed by delicious coffee and sweetmeats.
What a find! I have no doubt that this lovely pub will feature in some of my future stories, although we might have to make a few return visits – purely in the interests of research, of course.
Have a lovely week everyone. Rx

Rena, how cosy. Looks like something from an Agatha Raisin book. You must write a story around this pub. Can’t wait to read it.

My thoughts exactly, Susan. I will have to go back there, though – just to make sure I get the details right. Rx
About the daylight – if I remember correctly, after the shortest day, we can add on one minute of light every day. We noticed it was still light after 4.00 pm today. Just look out for the emerging snowdrops and you’ll cheer up ! Spring’s not that far off.

Ah, Spring! Thanks for reminding us that it’s not so far away, Maggie. The green shoots of daffodils have already put in an appearance in our garden. All we need now is the first sight of those brave little snowdrops and we can forget all about dreary January. Rx
That looks really lovely – I’ll be there!x
